Time for the thirteenth instalment in the "Skrillex Book Club".
ICYMI, we're taking a listening journey through the discography of the great Sonny Moore and sharing some of our thoughts along the way.
Last week, we listened to the bad one.

This week, the storm clouds part and the sun rises once more...

Holy peak.
I may go as far to say that this is the best thing Skrillex has released in the past 10 years. An incredible amalgamation of both new and old. As this was a surprise release, I had no idea it was coming out until the Dropbox link landed in my inbox. And what a surprise it was. A 46 minute continuous mix of new tracks, VIPs, and leaks dating as far back as 2010. I sat my ass down and listened Immediately. Honestly, I wish I could listen to it for the first time again.

What a fun record this is. That's the best way I can describe it. Pure fun and energy. It doesn't take itself too seriously, as is evident by the various ad-libs from host DJ Smokey. There are some really good ones lol. I think my favourite is "I have Skrillex trapped in my basement. Play this at full volume or I'll put him in the hole". The continuous mix really works well here. Drop after drop after drop. Never a dull moment. It's kinda hard to touch on tracks individually because of it being a mix though, most are pretty short. A few highlights of mine are the pair "Things I Promised" and "Recovery" (featuring another fave ad-lib, "F*ck Skrillex. This is Sonny Moore"). They work so well together I just count them as one track. The "See You Again VIP" is also great. I love how it almost teases the appearance of Voltage later on the track list but we'll get to that. "ZEET NOISE" with Dylan Brady is definitely a good one. It's a little underwhelming on its own but by god does it hit when you put it in a mix. "Fricky VIP" is the next hint we get of "the Old Skrillex". This one reworks a DJ tool from 2011 (I first heard it under the title "True Gangsters" but apparently it was called "Fricky Long" according to the Sonny Moore Tracker). A nice little first taste of the nostalgia yet to come.

When I say that this is a great mix of both new and old Skrillex, I mean it both in sensibilities and literally. The newer tracks while clearly in his more modern style, have the same energy and lightheartedness that I'd expect from earlier in his career. The production is still top notch but it doesn't feel like it's trying to rub it in your face. There's nothing more to prove here. The literal part is in it's resurfacing of tracks from Sonny's "golden era". The 3 track run before the album's outro is an absolute trip. "DNB TING", a Bangarang-era outtake, is the first of the trio and Oh My God it goes so hard. Funnily enough, this is where I start to tear up a little lol. It just brings me back to a very particular time in my childhood - browsing the Skrillex Mothership forums, listening to all of these leaks and unreleased tracks on a shitty MP3 downloader app I had on my iPod Touch. Another one of those tracks being "San Diego VIP". You have no idea how psyched I was to see this on the tracklist and finally getting an official release. Even alongside the more modern sounding tracks, it still sounds fresh to me. It really felt like a full circle moment. Even more so going into "Voltage". The drop on this version is crazy and definitely works to blend the old and new eras. I'm used to the earlier demo version's drop and so still more partial to it but really, both are great.

I realize most of my thoughts on this record have just been "wow, this song is awesome", but this album really is one that I don't think words can do justice. A retrospective moving in both directions. A victory lap. This felt like more than just a return to form. This felt like a thank you. What a way to end a contract.

Now it's your turn!
What are your thoughts on this album? Do you love it/hate it? Have you even heard it? (if not, go listen, the image is a link to it's RYM page)
Speak your mind!

April 1, 2025. I wake up and log onto Twitter. I find out that new Skrillex music is sent out to those who subscribed to a newsletter, which then leaks. I listen to the leak uploaded to a dropbox link and am utterly blown away by what i'm hearing. That leak would end up being Skrillex's new album, F*CK U SKRILLEX YOU THINK HE LOVE YOU FOR YOU MONEY BUT I KNOW WHAT HE REALLY LOVES YOU FOR ITS YOUR BRAND NEW LEOPARD SKIN PILLBOX HAT or something idk, which would later be uploaded to streaming services a few hours later. I was introduced to this album as a roughly 45 minute mix with no tracklist, so I pretty much fully consider this one big long beefy track. I remember clearly thinking to myself "Wow this song is really good. I wonder when the next track starts?" only to realize when the official tracklist dropped that that was a stretch of at least 7 tracks.

I can't even really do a track-by-track breakdown of this one because there's so many and also they're all so short, so I'll just talk about my favorite moments. The drop on "SPITFIRE" fully convinced me that this was gonna be something special. Listing every drop that went hard would take me forever because oh my god there are so many. There are several callbacks to old Skrillex songs, many more of which I was able to recognize thanks to this book club. There are the obvious ones, like Summit on "THINGS I PROMISED", but there's also the reference to Leaving on "BOOSTER" and, quite possibly the most random callback on the entire record, Skrillex's infamous remix of Kendrick Lamar's HUMBLE on HOLD ON, which made me audibly lol the first time I heard it. The laughs don't stop there though, because throughout the record we have numerous ad-libs from the one and only Dj Smokey. Some of my favorite ad-libs on the record are "Shadow Wizard Skrillex Gang. We love casting dubstep," "I have severe depression," "This beat drop has been seized by Atlantic Records and has been replaced with silence," and my personal favorite, "I heard that snare took him two years to make." If we really want to talk highlights, then the stretch of tracks from "G2G" to "VOLTAGE" is absolutely legendary. "G2G" = BANGER. "DNB TING" = RAGER. "SAN DIEGO VIP" = BETTER THAN SEX. To close things out there's the penultimate track "VOLTAGE", the title track from the long lost Skrillex album. Hearing this for the first time genuinely made me emotional. Really made me ruminate on how many years I've been a Skrillex fan.

If I was held and gunpoint and forced to talk about my least favorite moments from FUS, they'd probably the the drop on "SLICKMAN" which is probably the weakest drop on the record, and also "AZASU", which is essentially just a list of credits. Whenever I do a full album listen (which is very frequently), I usually just stop after VOLTAGE.

Where Don't Get Too Close made me lose faith in Skrillex dropping a banger album ever again, FUS happily proved me wrong. It harkens back to the Old Skrillex without nostalgiabaiting while also looking towards the future of Skrillex without all the boring stuff. I'm glad he didn't just go "Hey guys remember when I made Bangarang?" for an entire album and was able to finally find a way to make his new material work in an old Skrillex context. It's the best Skrillex album by a mile and most consistent project he's ever done. SKRILLEX IS ALIVE.
I'M GONNA BREAK MY MONITOR I SWEAR

i will probably agree with you on SLICKMAN but it's also kinda funny, especially with the "This is f*cked beyond repair" ad-lib. i actually don't mind AZASU, i think it's a cute little credit roll.

so similarly to qff and dgtc, i heard about this and i was like "oh holy shit thats awesome" and then never listened to the album. even when i heard voltage was on here i was like "oh holy shit thats awesome" and then never listened to it. so basically what im saying is i know next to nothing about this other than it has voltage and is supposedly really good.

wow! i think its safe to say this is definitely his best album. the continuous mix thing really works in its favor. this album DOES suffer from the "we just have good textures and need a vessel to put them out" curse that qff had but it being a continuous mix as opposed to a bunch of isolated tracks in an album or god forbid a ton of singles with no compilation or real home for them really saves it all. that being said these tracks wouldddd work fiiiine as singles but them being packaged the way they are in this album truly elevates all of them. dj smokey host is so fucking peak and having a like credits sequence at the end of the album is hilarious we need more of this. its interesting that a lot of the best tracks are on the album and not released as singles. that makes sense the last 2 albums also had some of the more "important" tracks not be released as singles. notably qff and hazel theme. even if that one wasnt the best it was sort of built up in the album as like spiritually important or whatever. so obviously it makes sense voltage isnt a single for that reason but if voltage was a single it would get NUMBERS. so i dont know. some of these tracks are really really good though. its hard to really comment on this album in depth because it does so many things. its hard to really categorize things based on certain aspects, especially with 34 different tracks you would need to account for. so i might just have to leave it here and say this album is really good i guess

best track: voltage or if thats too boring of an answer g2g
worst track: skrillex is dead or if thats too boring of an answer animals beat
quick edit: i just remembered that i planned to write "hype moments and aura the album" somewhere in this forum post but forgot to so im fulfilling that personal quota of mine here and now
