First one of the year...we're back

What have you been listening to this week?

Talk about whatever music has marked your radar that you feel like talking about this week.

Checked out a few things this past week but my pick is...

Sloan - Twice Removed

A nice little 90s Canadian alt-rock record. Not too long, not too short. Nothing crazy interesting but solid overall. Will be revisiting. Listened to this one the day after new years while walking to the subway station from a friend's place. Slick and slushy sidewalks and frosty air. Felt very Canadian.

And a track that's been sticking with me over the past couple months has been '4 3 2 1' by k-os. Still gotta listen to the album that one comes from. Peep k-os if you haven't.

we are so back

Lido - Everything

i'll do a little revising of what i already wrote on rym:

this album was BIG to me when it came out but haven't listened to it since like 2017 maybe. it randomly came back in my mind last night so i decided to see if it was still as good as i remembered. i admit it is ridiculously corny in some places (i almost broke out laughing at some of the vocals and lyrics) but i can't help but admire it. Murder, Crazy, Citi Bike, the whole bridge section of Falling Down and the last track are incredible. jaden smith. also holy fuck the 808's & Heartbreak influence is way more obvious than i thought? like he is just straight up ripping off those sounds at some points. i miss when that man meant something to people. all in all this album, albeit being pretty average future bass, was pretty good at making EDM the last thing it wants to be (a high concept album).

Yasuaki Shimizu - Music for Commercials

nothing matches the start of january like Kankyo motherfucking Ongaku. like the title suggests these were tiny ditties composed as background music for 80's japanese commercials and were never intended to be consumed outside of their original context, but somehow on their own they have a striking beauty to them. apparently OPN references this album a lot. i put this on in the background while doing some work and it makes for perfect background music. Seiko 3 is beautiful and if there's any track that should be checked out it's that one. dude was off the goofy juice when composing the Bridgestone tracks.

Jane Remover - ♡

i had only been slightly interested and kinda "cool, but whatever" about jane up until this ep came out, but ever since it has i've been all in. genuinely no piece of music in a while has filled me with as much hope and life as this ep has, i have found myself almost tearing up multiple times at tracks like So What, Music Baby or Dream Sequence. a pinnacle of pop music in this generation. that's really all i have to say about it. if there is an album to come with this in 2026 then i gotta prepare for Music Society to change.

this reminded me that i've never actually listened to 808s. which is crazy, i know. maybe i should do that...

Noisia - Split the Atom

The interludes on this are better and more interesting than 90% of the actual album tracks. That's all I have to say about it.

Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks

I find it really funny how Trent did a whole April Fools joke about a NIN album produced by Timbaland and then the next album he makes sounds exactly like that. Seriously, listen to "Satellite" and tell me you don't hear it. Also, from what I can tell, a lot of people think "Everything" is one of the worst NIN songs even though i think this is easily one of the best songs they've made in recent memory. Like cmon this shit bangs how can you not like Trent getting a little Joy Division-y? I know i've been joking about this album but its highkey pretty underrated tbh.

i've only heard 'Copy Of A' off Hesitation Marks and it is kinda awesome. Very cool live also.

That song also rules.

Also I forgot to mention that OPN did a remix of Find My Way and that song is also awesome. Never knew I needed Reznor on an R plus 7 type beat until just now.
